徐文長少負才名，然性情孤傲，不拘小節(jié)。嘗游京師，與諸名士交游，每論詩文，輒有獨到見解。其書法蒼勁有力，畫作則灑脫飄逸，尤擅水墨花卉，自成一家。然性多疑忌，常因小事而郁郁寡歡。晚年貧病交加，以賣畫為生，雖生活困頓，然志趣高潔，不改其風骨。

Xu Wenzhang was a renowned literary figure, painter, and playwright in the Ming Dynasty. Born in Shanyin, Zhejiang Province, he was known for his extraordinary talent and eccentric personality. Xu traveled to the capital during his youth and befriended many famous scholars. When discussing poetry and prose, he always had unique insights. His calligraphy was powerful and vigorous, while his paintings were free-spirited and elegant, especially his ink paintings of flowers and plants, which became his signature style. However, he was often suspicious and jealous, frequently becoming depressed over trivial matters. In his later years, he lived in poverty and illness, making a living by selling his paintings. Despite his difficult circumstances, his noble character remained unchanged.
